Last week four of us from Devizes Rotary (David L, David H, Paul and myself) were invited along to Devizes School to take part in an exercise to help Year 10 students better understand and practise their interviewing techniques.
David H and Paul joined one group of students, and David L and I the other to provide feedback as they performed their role-plays. These proved to be very useful in giving the students an idea of what to do (and not do!) in interview situations.
Below is a thank you card from Vix Mackay who organised the session:
Last Monday (27th November) the Final of the Devizes Area Rotary Young Chef Competition 2017 took place at the Farm Cookery School near Bromham.
Four contestants took part, namely Eliza Amer and Maddie Chesterton from Devizes School, and Leona Adams and Harrison Damon from Lavington School.
Thanks to Gretchen, the owner of the school, for letting us hold the competition there again, and to the three judges – Colin Lugg, Laura Mayes and Jackie Truscott – who did a great job judging the high quality work of the four contestants as they prepared their 3-course meals.
One of the things I really enjoy about the competition is that I get to meet and talk to the people that come along to support the contestants. It’s obvious that the contestants very much appreciate the support they give, and they were particularly pleased to see the two teachers that are responsible for Food Technology at their schools, namely Anna Woodman from Lavington School and Tabby Willis from Devizes School.
Two hours after starting cooking, the contestants could relax a little and stand back to admire their work:
Each competitor was then presented with a Certificate of Participation so that they had a momento of the evening,
When the moment of truth arrived the result was announced as follows:
Maddie Chesterton 110 points
Leona Adams 119 points
Harrison Damon 133 points
Eliza Amer 125 points
And so Harrison Damon was declared the Devizes Area Rotary Young Chef Champion for 2017. Many congratulations to him, and to all of the contestants for putting on a fantastic show!
Harrison has now been invited to go forward to the Regional Final which will take place at King Alfred School in Highbridge on Saturday 3rd February 2018, so please join me in wishing him the very best of luck in that.
Here’s a note from David Lamb regarding the recent talk given to Devizes Rotary Members by Phil Bevan, Headmaster of Devizes School.
Tuesday evening’s meeting on 19th September gave a good attendance of members and guests the chance to welcome the recently appointed head of Devizes School Philip Bevan as speaker. He brought us up to date on what was happening at the school, and its plans for the future, very well illustrated by a visual presentation.
In passing he mentioned the event some years ago when an escaped lion invaded the school and we could not help thinking how that would have been dealt with by current health and safety.
Most impressive photos of the November memorial day event around the quad were shown along with a lonely duck breaking the ‘no walking on the quad rule’. We all got the clear impression of someone who is leading from the front with an excellent relationship with his pupils and staff. Certainly two of his pupils who were working at The Crown that evening received a bit of a surprise when he arrived, but the exchanges between them later illustrated this excellent relationship.
Hopefully Devizes Rotary can cement a useful contact with Phil and Devizes School for the future.
