Devizes Rotarians gift trees to the town

A worldwide Rotary goal was set last year by Rotary International President Ian Riseley, for at least one tree to be planted for every Rotary member to help change the environment for the better.

To help with this challenge, Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland President Denis Spiller has secured the valuable help of the Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest conservation charity. The charity is delighted to support Rotary by supplying trees and advice to make sure the saplings have the best chance of survival.

Devizes Rotarians rose to the challenge, and last week Devizes Mayor Andy Geddes accepted 20 trees on behalf of the Town from Devizes Rotary saying that it was a thoughtful and most worthwhile gift.

The trees have been planted on the edge of the extended cemetery in the hope that they will be appreciated by all who visited the tranquil location. President Alan said that Devizes Rotary members are delighted to be able to provide the trees as part of their environmental programme which last year had included the planting of a further 20,000 Crocus Corns on the Green. Asked if Rotary would donate and plant crocus corms again this year, Alan was able to confirm that Rotarian Clive Harland, who follows him as Rotary President, had already made the commitment to do so.

Devizes Rotary are grateful to the Devizes Parks groundsmen for their help in arranging the plantings.
