Rotary Young Chef Competition 2017-18 : Devizes Area Heat 1

Last Monday (16th October) the first heat of the Devizes Area Rotary Young Chef Competition 2017-18 took place at the fantastic Farm Cookery School near Bromham.

Four contestants took part – Jessica Spratley, Leona Adams and Thalia Cooper from Lavington School, and Maddie Chesterton from Devizes School – and what a great competition they gave us!

Thanks so much to Gretchen, the owner of the school, for letting us hold the competition there again this year, and to the two other judges involved – Colin and Josie – for doing a great job judging the competition.

Thanks also to the people that came along to support the contestants. Pretty nerve-wracking at times having to sit back and watch while the contestants were cooking their 3 course meals, but also fun, and the really good news is that they got to taste the fabulous dishes after the judges had had their fill!

After two hours of hard work the contestants could stand back and admire their work, and as a momento of the evening Alan Martin, President of Devizes Rotary, presented each of them a Certificate of Participation.

The contestants were marked against the following criteria

Presentation of table including flowers, cloth etc 10
Meal served at correct temperature 10
Neatness of working area and hygiene 15
Taste and presentation of starter 20
Taste and presentation of dessert 20

Once again very well done to all of them, and congratulations to them for the high standards they showed.

The second Devizes Area Heat will take place next Monday, 30th October. After that the scores of all competitors from both Heat 1 and Heat 2 will be compared, and the top 4 contestants will go through to the Devizes Area Final which will take place on Monday 27th November.
